Call for Applications

#SICSS2019_Istanbul

16-29 June

Kadir Has University

Kadir Has University is hosting the first-ever SICSS in Istanbul! The event will take place through 16-29 June 2019 as an intensive summer school in computational social science. Sessions and lectures will take place in tandem with the flagship event at Princeton University, along with 9 other satellite institutions around the world!

Eligibility

Participation is primarily geared towards Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty within 7 years of their Doctorate. Master’s students able to demonstrate exceptional talent, skill or motivation will also be considered. However, there are no restrictions based on citizenship, country of study, or country of employment. Most participant costs during the workshop, including housing and most meals, will be covered, and most travel expenses will be reimbursed up to a set cap. About 20 participants will be invited.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and fields of study. Social scientists with research-specific interest in programming and computational research, as well as advanced coders with research topics within social sciences are welcome.  We evaluate applicants along a number of dimensions: 1) research and teaching in the area of computational social science, 2) likelihood to benefit from participation, 3) likelihood to contribute to the educational experience of other participants, 4) potential to spread computational social science to new intellectual communities and areas of research. Further, when making our evaluations, attempt to account for an applicant’s career stage and previous educational opportunities.

How to Apply

All applicants must submit the following documents to sicss.istanbul@gmail.com as a single, combined PDF file.

  1. a curriculum vitae,

  2. a statement (maximum three pages) describing both any current research and your interest in computational social science,

  3. one writing sample (no more than 35 pages). Co-authored work is acceptable for the writing sample, but if you submit co-authored work, we recommend that you include a few sentences describing the contributions of each individual author.

  4. Applicants who are graduate students or postdoctoral researchers must submit at least one letter of recommendation from faculty advisors or professors familiar with their work in computational social science. Letters of recommendation should be as informative as possible about your standing in your program, general ability, research potential, and (if applicable) special interest in computational social science.

  5. All applications must include an e-mail and an alternative means of contact (e.g., phone number).

In order to be guaranteed full consideration, all application materials must be submitted before February 19th, 2019. Applications that are not complete by the deadline may not receive full consideration. We will notify applicants solely through e-mail in mid-March, and will ask participants to confirm their participation very soon thereafter.
